Graduate Education Programs
Looking to earn an initial teaching certification or a second certification?
The University of Scranton's education programs can help. We offer two on-campus programs: an MS in Secondary Education and an MS in Special Education.
We can also prepare you to take the edTPA assessment, a new certification requirement adopted by many states.
Our programs are approved by the PA Department of Education. Program graduates who receive a passing score on certification examinations are eligible for certification in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
MS in Secondary Education
Offers courses and fieldwork for students seeking an initial Pennsylvania Instructional I certificate, grades 7-12, in a specific academic area. Students can expand their certification areas by taking targeted state examinations.
- Certification Areas: Biology, Chemistry, Communication, History, Political Science, English, General Science, Mathematics, Modern Language, Latin and Physics
Students must complete a total of 34 graduate credit hours, 70 hours of field experience, and a semester of student teaching. A comprehensive examination is also required.
MS in Special Education
Offers courses and fieldwork for students seeking an initial Pennsylvania Instructional I certificate in Special Education, PK-12. The program is newly revised to meet the latest state standards, with an emphasis on responsible inclusion.
Choose from two certification pathways: PreK- 8 certification or 7- 12 certification. Both pathways require 36 credit hours of coursework, including 12 weeks of student teaching.
Students must fulfill the research and foundation course requirements and pass a comprehensive examination prior to program completion.
