Tips for Success as an Online Student
- Schedule your study time. Without scheduled class times, it’ll be up to you to make the time for your studies. Keeping time blocked off on your calendar can help.
- Help your family understand the investment you’re making. Your family and friends will want to support you in expanding your horizons. Let them know how to help, whether with feedback on a writing assignment or dedicated time to study.
- Connect with your professors. Building a connection with your faculty is an invaluable benefit of higher education. Reach out to them as your program begins and let them know you’re ready to take full advantage of your time together.
- Keep your goal in focus. “Some courses will be very difficult and require a significant amount of work each week,” says Ken Starkey, a graduate of Scranton’s online MBA program. “But do not become discouraged. Keep pushing forward. There is a light at the end of the tunnel.”

A typical week for our online students consists of 12–15 hours of study time for each graduate course. Each course is designed to be asynchronous, meaning you can log into Engage, our online platform, on your schedule, and complete coursework when and where you please. Some courses may feature synchronous elements, but most are entirely asynchronous, allowing you to learn when it’s convenient for your schedule.
Students and their instructors can interact through discussion posts, and instructors keep office hours to chat via phone or video conference. Many students also find it easy to communicate with instructors over email.
Yes. The University of Scranton is regionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) and holds necessary programmatic accreditation as well. You’ll be held to the same high standards as our students on campus.
