School Counseling, MS: Career Outlook

Mentor the Next Generation

School counselors prepare elementary, middle, and high school students for postsecondary success by developing comprehensive programs that foster socioemotional development and career readiness. School counselors also provide individual and group counseling to students in need of assistance.

With a Master of Science in school counseling, you will impact the lives of students in public and private PreK-12 settings. Some individuals with a school counseling background also work as private practice therapists or college and career counselors.1

Employment of school counselors is projected to grow 5% from 2022 through 20321
About 26,600 openings for school counselors are projected each year, on average, over the decade.1

Schools are expected to hire more counselors to respond to the academic, developmental and career-planning needs of their students.1

Professional school counselors must hold a master’s degree and state certification to practice in the field. Scranton's master's program prepares students for certification in Pennsylvania.

Students have the opportunity to pursue additional credentials, such as the National Certified Counselor (NCC), National Certified School Counselor (NCSC), and Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC).
