School Counseling, MS: Curriculum

Overview

60 TOTAL CREDITS REQUIRED

The average program duration is 2.5 to 3 years of full-time study. The School Counseling program is a 60-credit curriculum including 21 credits of school counseling core curriculum, 21 credits on foundations of professional counseling, six credits of counseling practice sequences, three credits of practicum, six credits of internship and nine credits of electives.

The curriculum allows students to fulfill the educational requirements for certification as a professional school counselor in the state of Pennsylvania. Nine credits of electives are offered to provide students with opportunities for additional study in individual areas of interest and for development of skills in working with specific client populations.

Additionally, a student must satisfactorily complete his or her Professional Counselor Portfolio. The School Counseling Program manual specifies four submission dates for a student’s portfolio during the program of study.

Students are also required to take the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE) near the conclusion of their graduate program.
