Secondary Education, MS: Career Outlook

Help Prepare the Leaders of the Next Generation

Teachers help mold and shape the next generation of citizens across the world, and the demand for educators has no signs of slowing down. More than 67,000 high school openings1 and more than 42,000 middle school openings2 are projected each year despite limited employment growth.

By earning your master's in secondary education, you can set yourself apart from others in the field. The program provides certifications necessary to take state tests and grow your abilities, enabling you to work in middle and high schools across the country.

Middle School teacher

$64,290/year

Middle school teachers typically work with students in grades 6-8, building on the fundamentals taught in elementary school and preparing them for high school. They may teach one subject to several classes throughout the day, or work with a single class, teaching every subject. They assess students and work with them to improve their abilities.1

High school teacher:

$65,220/year

High school teachers help students prepare for life after graduation. They teach students in grades 9 through 12, usually specializing in one core or elective subject area. They may instruct students from different grades throughout the day. When they are not teaching classes, high school teachers plan lessons, grade assignments and tests, and meet with other teachers and staff.2

Additional roles for graduates of our Secondary Education master's program:

  • Instructional coordinator
  • Middle school or high school principal
  • Adult basic and secondary education teacher
  • English as a Second Language teacher
