Accounting, PhD: Career Outlook

Gain Skills to Instruct Tomorrow’s Business Professionals

Accounting professors prepare college students in business, accounting, finance and other programs for success in today’s market.  With a doctorate in accounting, you will impact the lives of students pursuing postsecondary education.

While some universities allow individuals with a master’s degree to teach postsecondary courses, a doctoral degree separates you from less-credentialed individuals and opens up opportunities with larger schools.

In 2014, an intensifying shortage of accounting professors was projected to reach crisis levels over the next ten years.1

Scranton's doctoral program in accounting was created in direct response to specific calls made by the Pathways Commission (led by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the American Accounting Association) to mitigate the accounting faculty shortage crisis and advance the practice relevancy of doctoral education.

The program incorporates many of the innovative recommendations provided by our business accrediting body, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

Our accounting doctorate is a rigorous research degree designed to provide experienced professionals with the advanced skills and credentials required to secure and succeed in full-time, tenure-track faculty positions at accredited institutions.

Several of our accounting faculty have transitioned from senior roles in practice to distinguished careers in academia. This experience uniquely positions our faculty to provide valuable guidance and mentoring to others making such a transition, helping to ensure the success of our doctoral students.

Accounting professors teach undergraduate and graduate level accounting courses at colleges and universities. Many accounting professors complete research papers and projects in concordance with their university guidelines. Accounting professors hold lectures, grade projects, assign work, design courses and contribute to the academic and professional pursuits of their employing university.2
